Utah District Attorneys Uncover Alleged Motives Behind Charlie Kirk Shooting
Proof submitted from local prosecutors on Tuesday shed light on what authorities suspect motivated Tyler Robinson to allegedly kill conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Obtained Messages Point To Political Motive
In digital communications quoted by the state, Robinson is quoted telling his roommate—referred to as undergoing a gender transition—that he had enough of Kirk’s “hatred”.
“Certain kinds of intolerance can’t be negotiated out,” Robinson reportedly said.
The state claim that Robinson’s mother told authorities her son had recently become increasingly ideological and had begun leaning to the left, embracing LGBTQ+ rights.
Family Conflict and Political Differences
This allegedly led to disagreements with family members, particularly between Robinson and his father, who held opposing beliefs.
Earlier media reporting indicated that Robinson’s parents were active Republican voters who supported Donald Trump in the last election.
Prosecutors cited a text in which Robinson referred to his father as “a strong Trump supporter”.
Planning and Execution of the Attack
According to prosecutors, Robinson mentioned Kirk’s appearance at UVU, calling it a “poor choice of location”.
His mother informed investigators that Robinson had accused Kirk of “promoting intolerance”.
Following the shooting, Robinson’s parents allegedly recognized their son in a security image released in the news.
Robinson’s father, a firearms owner, suspected the weapon used in the shooting matched one he had gifted to his son.
Admission and Arrest
In a conversation with his father, Tyler Robinson reportedly confessed to the murder, saying there was “excessive hatred” and that Kirk “promoted division”.
The suspect later turned himself in to authorities with the assistance of a family friend who was a local law enforcement official.
Proof and Accusations
The state pointed to DNA evidence recovered on the firearm abandoned near UVU, as well as messages to his partner, as key proof linking Robinson to the shooting.
Markings on shells discovered near the location included phrases such as “anti-fascist slogans” and “O bella ciao”.
But the accused allegedly dismissed these markings in a message as “fuckin … mostly a big meme”.
Roommate’s Question and Reply
In one exchanged messages, the partner asked Robinson, “You weren’t the one who did it right?”
Robinson—called his partner his “love”—allegedly responded, “I am, I’m sorry.”
Additionally, he expressed regret for “dragging into” the partner and wrote that he had wanted to keep the truth until he passed away naturally.
Legal Actions and Potential Penalty
Robinson is charged with aggravated murder, and prosecutors announced they intend to seek the maximum punishment upon he is found guilty.
A key element mentioned was that Robinson singled out Kirk due to his beliefs and speech.
Jeff Gray, chief state prosecutor in the county, stated that the decision to seek the ultimate sentence was made without external influence and guided only by the facts and nature of the offense.
