The English Team v South Africa – Women’s Global Tournament Starts

Silence please! The talking is over, for now at least, and England's global campaign is ready to commence. The bad news is, they begin against a formidable opponent with South Africa as their first rival. On the upside, they start with a tough game opposing the Proteas. A win in this match could provide immediate impetus for England and justify the cautious confidence from their pre-competition talk.

Pre-Tournament Momentum

An excellent win versus the Aussies during their final preparatory match has boosted that self-assurance, even if the individual performances of Alice Capsey (88 not out) alongside Sarah Glenn (claiming 5/32) caused a small team-selection puzzle for Charlotte Edwards.

Edwards is known for her success, so there’s no danger of England setting their sights low. Yet, externally they occupy a rare spot where their tournament benchmark is quite obvious.

Competition Outlook

Failure to reach the semi-finals would be a minor shocker, even considering the progress made by usual lower-ranked teams. Advancing to the ultimate game ahead of either Australia or India, the two clear favourites to lift the trophy, would mark a significant accomplishment. And if England win it… we shouldn’t speculate further. It’s far too soon for such discussions.

This fixture commences at half past ten in the morning BST.
