Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Squad to Face India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a surprise selection.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the ODI side after scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their top-order woes.
Pace Returns and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Schedule
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
