Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
He commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the organization, and anticipate tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his decision to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to approve a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Epstein.
The measure will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after changing his position on the matter following pressure from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of financier-linked emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link the academic to influential international personalities.
Personal Response
After the emails were shared with the public, he expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to persist in interacting with the financier".
He added that he hoped "to rebuild faith and repair bonds with the persons closest to me".
Professional History
The economist served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public duties recently on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the organization.
Summers joined the board of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
