Exploring a Unusual Steam Demo: Controlling a Piece of Feces with the Goal to Find the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is now live, and enthusiasts have found plenty of interesting creations from small studios. However, one stands out for its unconventional concept. Called Unko Technica, this retro-inspired side-scrolling game lets you play a character that is actually a dung attempting to make its way to a restroom. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."

How you interact is straightforward: you only need a single jump button. Throughout numerous levels, battle tough enemies and access a shop to acquire customizations for your dung hero.

Execute your movements with caution, since one wrong move means starting over. Leap off bubbles to propel yourself upward, traverse disappearing surfaces, and interact with triggers to reveal secret routes. Earn UN-KOINS and use them on tougher levels as gameplay gets crazy.

In terms of design, the game boasts vibrant environments and a killer soundtrack. The retro visual style with shifting geometric shapes may remind fans of beloved games like Earthbound.

While it's difficult to think of similar titles where you are a dung character, interactive entertainment have long featured fecal matter. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, you can create throwables from character excrement. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ feces as soil enrichment. Unsurprisingly, this theme shows up heavily in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.

Despite its humorous concept, Unko Technica has already earned significant awards, including being named best at a major publisher's GYAAR Studio in 2023. This trial version is accessible currently on Steam, with the complete version set to debut on PC on November 19.
