Adolescent Found Dead Following Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of taking the ashes of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if her son was her offspring. The message added: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my apartment."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged taken ashes attracted online responses, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.
Police said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had not reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest learned that a 19-year-old urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, describing how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The inquest heard from educational personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang Kai's family telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The court learned his parents said they did not got that message.
Formal Conclusion
Senior investigator told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.
"Likely untruths were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"During 11 November, he was questioned by the police and following his questioning he was released whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no proof that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to discern his purpose."
