A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance
Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from sleeping youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.
A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup needs a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
There aren’t all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
