2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are far from new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems uniquely powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.
When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a true croaking cultural moment.
